Guidelines and information regarding incarcerated populations.

Incarceration

HIV/AIDS and Incarceration

HIV/AIDS in correctional facilities (prisons and jails) has been a significant issue since the beginning of the epidemic. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, while overall rates of infection are decreasing in Federal and state prisons, the rate of AIDS cases among the prison population remains more than 2½ times the rate in the general U.S. population.

There are a number of Federal resources that address the issue of HIV/AIDS in correctional settings:

National Criminal Justice Reference System–Inmate Health Assistance
Publications and information provided for inmates, including information and statistics on HIV/AIDS in prisons.

National Library of Medicine–HIV/AIDS: Prisoners/Prisons
Resources on prisoners and HIV/AIDS complied by the National Library of Medicine’s Specialized Information Services.

National Prevention Information Network–Prisoners: Communities at Risk Exit Disclaimer
Links to resources on prisoners and HIV/AIDS, including information on associated opportunistic infections.
